On the class wiki site, post your favorite new Web 2.0 tool that has not been covered in detail in this class that you have discovered in this course or elsewhere. List the URL, what the tool is, and why you find it useful using the wiki template page. No duplication allowed-each page must be an original new tool. This can be done after reviewing the Unit 9 material, which covers more Web 2.0 resources.
The site is a classroom management tool that brings the video game to the classroom experience. Students can earn experience points for participating in class, helping other students, doing well on tests and quizzes, or anything else a teacher wants to count for points. After a student earns points, he/she can customize the character, use powers in class such as switch seats, use notes on a test, etc.. The site has a free version and a paid version. The free version has been everything I have needed for my class. There aren't any ads and there is a phone and tablet app available for students and teachers to use along with the site. A forum is available for students and teachers to work together in the class. It would be most appropriate for 6th - 10th graders in my opinion.
Educational Uses of Site
I have used this tool to help facilitate classroom discussions and to encourage students to work together and help each other out when the need arises. As students answer questions, I can award points instantly. Students have then used their points to by things for their characters and used powers to get notes on their test or help other students get points. I have also posted questions for discussion to the Classcraft forum. Students then replied instantly earning experience points.
Review of Site
I like ClassCraft a lot. There are plenty of resources in the teacher page that helps new teachers learn the ropes. The grade book tool is easy to use and allows you to quickly upload an entire class' test scores then automatically awards points or gives "damage points" to students. The students that have taken to it the most in my experience are 8th-10th graders, but I think it's worth a try for other grades as well. Students enjoyed customizing their characters and working as a team to earn points, use powers and overcome obstacles. Classcraft brought my class together and created a competitive, but friendly atmosphere in class.
